Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival

Dear Valued Clients and Partners,

We are pleased to inform you about an important cultural celebration in China – the Dragon Boat Festival, known as “Duanwu Jie” in Chinese. This traditional festival holds great significance in our country and we would like to share its customs and the upcoming holiday schedule with you.

About the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, which falls on June 10th this year. The festival has been celebrated for over 2,000 years and is a time to honor the famous Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period.

Traditional Customs

  1. Dragon Boat Racing: One of the most exciting aspects of the festival is the dragon boat races. Long, elaborately decorated boats shaped like dragons are paddled by teams of rowers, accompanied by the rhythmic beating of drums. These races symbolize the attempt to rescue Qu Yuan and are a major highlight of the celebrations.
  2. Eating Zongzi: A key part of the festival is the preparation and eating of Zongzi – sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. These are filled with various ingredients such as red bean paste, dates, or meats. The tradition commemorates the villagers’ efforts to save Qu Yuan by throwing rice into the river to distract the fish.
  3. Hanging Mugwort and Calamus: People often hang mugwort and calamus plants on their doors to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. These plants are believed to have protective qualities and are an important part of the festival’s customs.
